How do I prepare myself for treatment?

The laser/IPL targets the pigment in the hair and skin and thus it is important that you do not have a suntan - whether natural or artificial. If you have a tan you should wait at least 3 weeks after your last UV exposure until there is no activity in the pigment producing cells. If you are plucking, waxing or threading, you should stop 2 weeks prior to treatment and change to shaving or cutting the hair. The treatment area needs to be shaved the day before treatment. You should avoid perfumes, deodorants or any potential irritants in the treatment area before and after treatment. You should avoid alcohol, aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatorys such as Brufen for 48 hours before treatment.

Are there any side effects when using IPL

It is normal to experience some redness of the skin and some very mild swelling which can last from an hour to 24 hours. Sometimes a blister may appear which is normal for some skin types but quite rare.
In some instances the redness may last a few days and there could be some grazing or 'scabbing' which typically subsides over a short period of time. This is a normal appearance and result when trying to remove superficial skin pigment marks, especially when using stronger settings.
The appearance of the treated area immediately after a session does vary from one person to another. The after effects are usually minor and may include some redness. Most people are able to return immediately to normal activity.

Are the results permanent?

This method can achieve a permanent effect. Generally, 5to 8 treatment sessions on one specific area are required for long-lasting results. That's because hair grows in cycles comprised of 3 phases. It's virtually impossible to destroy all the hair during the appropriate stage of the hair growth cycle in one single treatment session. Still, most hair that is destroyed in the growth phase has been reported to stay at bay for as long as one year.
